Eclipse at embedded world 2015

Embedded World is only a few weeks away, and I'm getting really excited about it. For the first time, the Eclipse Foundation, together with its partners and working groups, will have a presence at the conference. From February 24 - 26 we will be present in Nuremberg at one of the biggest embedded conferences in the world!

For this year, we have the following member companies of the Eclipse Foundation joining us:

In addition to this group, the Polarsys Working Group will join the show as well as participants from the ITEA Amalthea4Public project that the Eclipse Foundation is part of.

If you are going to Nuremberg, make sure to stop by at our pavilion. You will find us in Hall 4, booth 160 that we share with our friends from OSADL. We look forward to seeing you there!

EclipseCon Europe 2014 by Countries

EclipseCon Europe 2014 - I liked it. Not sure what others think, but I really liked it! In any case we will diligently evaluate our attendee survey (Hint: In case you haven't done it yet, please do so). And as always, we will publish the results.

One interesting piece of data was the attendance by country that my colleague Roxanne has put together. It shows that we are not just a German conference, but a truly European and international one. German attendance is still above 50%. But as the number of attendees was growing again by a good percentage to 600, so was the number of attendees from other countries. Here is the graph that Roxanne was putting together:

So I thought I should tell Torkild that Norway is really moving up in the ranking. And after he has discussed with his resident scientist buddies he came back with an even more astonishing revelation: Based on their approach Norway is actually on the second rank! And here is what they discovered: If you compute the per-capita attendance, the ranking looks like this:

Welcome to the wonderful world of science!

Eclipse IoT Playground @ EclipseCon Europe 2014

Hello everybody -

In the last couple of years Internet of Things (IoT) has become one of the hottest topic in the computer industries. In the Eclipse community, we are seeing new projects appear, companies starting new businesses on IoT technologies, talks and workshops at our conferences and more and more individuals presenting their cool stuff.

With the IoT playground we create a place at EclipseCon Europe where everybody is invited to show what they are doing. This can be companies presenting their IoT related offerings (hardware, software, tools and gadgets) or individuals showing their stuff that they  for home and fun. Everything goes, as long as it doesn’t offend others!

We expect to see demonstrations, programming or soldering challenges, or other cool ideas that you might come up with.

For more information on time, participation and ideas, please refer to https://www.eclipsecon.org/europe2014/playground
Please redistribute this email if you know somebody who might be interested to participate.

We look forward to hearing from you!

PS: I want to thank all the people how have helped to make this idea become real!

Regards / Liebe Grüße,

Ralph Mueller

My EclipseCon NA 2014

I arrived early in San Francisco and had the weekend off, hanging around the Hyatt hotel and getting some exercise in - notably going to the driving range close by with Jonas. Aside from that, all the early arrivers got some exposure to the republican convention that was taking place over the weekend.

The actual conference was a really nice experience. The Hyatt provides nice space, the space for the exhibitors was well put together. The quality of the keynotes was by far better than in  2013 (this is my personal opinion). In particular, I enjoyed Hans-Jürgen Kugler's keynote demanding a creative society to drive the 4th industrial revolution. For all those who missed the keynote: You'll find the recordings of all keynotes soon on the Eclipse Foundation's Youtube channel.

Most of the time I was busy with promoting our Long-Term Support working group. Just in time for the conference, we were able to overhaul the content for the LTS website and get the Long-Term Support marketplace started with now 7 companies offering LTS for various projects. At the conference we were conducting an outreach session with 20+ people attending, and we had good conversations at the poster session on Thursday.

No EclipseCon NA would be complete without a European night. And that's what we did on Thursday night: You rarely see so many Canadians that try to convince you that all their ancestors have just come over from the good old world :-)

Now it's over, and it's time to get excited about EclipseCon France 2014.

Call for participation!

The Eclipse Foundation has been accepted as a mentoring organization for this year´s Google Summer of Code!

We are very happy to have been chosen for the ninth time in a row. This year is the 10th anniversary of GSoC and the Google Team is marking the occasion by accepting10% more mentoring organizations and 10% more students.

The role of the Eclipse Foundation is to act as an umbrella organization for the Eclipse projects. We have again a very interesting mix of project ideas. For the first time there are project ideas from our Working Groups, Locationtech and IoT (Internet of Things).

The Google Summer of Code is a program designed to encourage university students to participate in open source software development.

Students have a opportunity over the summer to get hands on experience at open source coding, without compromising their time with a summer job that is unrelated to their field of studies. Also, students will gain insight into the real world of software development.  At the end of the summer Google grants a total of 5500 USD to every student who passes all exams.

Two More Weeks To EclipseCon Europe 2013

Yes, we've only a few days left before meeting again in Ludwigsburg.

All preparation work has been done, and for the Eclipse Foundation team we can just wait how it goes after working for 8 long months on preparing the conference. But believe me, we have prepared well.

The registration numbers look good. I'm pretty confident that we will reach the numbers, which would then be another growth compared to last year's ECE. Some of the Tuesday tutorials are getting the recognition that they deserve, some are even fully booked. If you have not chosen your tutorial yet, you better hurry!

The mix of talks that the program committee together with the folks from the OSGi PC have chosen is again very high quality, the keynotes sound exceptional and the side events are pretty outstanding! It was very educational to watch Christian Campo and his program committee interact with the keynote speakers and the people submitting talks. While they still had to reject many of them, they made sure that everybody got a good explanation why it happened and what can be improved in the future.

In the fun department we are able to bring back the Circus and the Band to EclipseCon Europe. A big thank you to the sponsors SAP and BSI AG for making this possible. Apropos sponsors: While we received a couple of downgrades and late cancelations from sponsors/exhibitors, we were able to reach our goals and thus guarantee good food, coffee and some free alcoholic beverages for the evening events.

And some random notes from me:

I'm really proud about the improvements that we have made to EclipseCon Europe website. I think it's a lot more informative than it used to be, we have added a whole bunch of information and we will do so next year as well. Special thanks go to our designer Markus from Munich: I would even reference his website here if he had one :)

As an experiment for 2013, we have offered special slots during the days to certain 'interest groups'.  It will be like the good old poster sessions, mixed in for a couple of hours during the day. As I write, we'll have reps from Long Term Support (LTS) working group, folks that want to speak about scientific components and people presenting projects that have been created just recently or are in proposal state!

If you are interested what is going on in our Working Groups make sure that you attend the face-to-face meetings that are taking place on Monday, October 28 in the Forum as well. Meetings include the Automotive Working Group, Polarsys and the M2M Working Group.

With that, I finish. I have to go and check with our real-time registration system what the news of the last 15 minutes are.
